Sintineddi ! Watchkeepers!
With the support of the Departmental Directorate for Territories and the Sea via the Lighthouses and Beacons Service, the University of Corsica and CNRS are continuing to roll out a network of autonomous weather stations on the island’s lighthouses.
This initiative strengthens territorial coverage beyond Météo-France, as part of the SAPHIR project (Sensor Augmented weather Predictions at High Resolution).
The Gulf of Ajaccio now has both of its major lighthouses equipped: Mezzu Mari and Capu di Muru. In urban areas, the city of Ajaccio will soon be covered as well, with deployment expected to be completed by September 2025.
Data is currently transmitted via a remote service, which will be relocated locally in October 2025. Eventually, remote Cloud transfers will give way to Edge Computing, with local servers to:

Data is currently transmitted via a remote service, which will be relocated locally in October 2025. Eventually, remote Cloud transfers will give way to Edge Computing, with local servers to:
- Minimize latency,
- Enhance real-time responsiveness,
- Reduce the digital and carbon footprint of meteorological data flows.
This strategy turns scientific instruments into smart alert, monitoring and mitigation systems, designed to support both local and vertical decision-making during extreme weather events. Within SAPHIR, decision-making will also be enhanced by Deep Learning models.
Big thanks to the technical and maritime staff of Phares et Balises for their continued dedication.
