Among the major scientific breakthroughs of recent years, the discovery of the Higgs boson and the detection of gravitational waves are spectacular successes crowning decades of effort by a large community. These discoveries reinforce two fundamental concepts in physics: the generation of the mass of elementary particles and the dynamics of space-time.
